These are called Pileated Woodpeckers, and are quiet commen around here. They are beautiful birds, and not overly shy, so one can creep fairly close. This photo was taken from inside my house however, so required no stealth.

Is it just leaves and twigs? Looks like I see two left eyeballs, one on a baby gator, the other a snake.
