Well my Kenko TC arrived today and the first lens I tried it on was my 90mm Tamron Macro (AF still works).

An example using 90mm, 1.4TC and DCR 250.

And just using 90mm and DCR 250

Thanks Scott if you get chance can you do some sample bug images with the lens and converter.

mike

Will do Mike, the above examples are straight out of camera no processing. Only resized.

I have that TC too and it is very versatile TC.

Sent from my iPhone.

I am hoping it is :) fingers crossed it will work with my old 80-400 as this will save me from buying a new lens and/or camera ;-)

It should work but you will get auto-focus slowdown in low light. I use it with my 300 F4 AF-D and the focus hunts a bit with my D700. I hope it will work better with the 800 focusing system for you.

The Af is pretty slow on the 80-400 (old version) anyway so I am used to making do ;-) it will be interesting to see how it goes and it there is any softness.

I have the same TC, it works on all my lenses. But,,, I am a bit disappointed in the IQ with the TC attached.
I have found I get better looking images if I use the lens without the TC, and just crop the photo to suit.
It could be my technique needs to be adjusted to get better results with it, I dont know.

Yep.. i think the TC would work well with any lens other than macros.
By 'work well' i mean the image quality loss that Brad refers to

I have seen other peoples photos using the TC and macro lenses, they looked OK. I mainly bought the TC to use with my 105 macro, and with a 300 f4 if I ever got one.
I took it out with my 105 on two occaasions, it produced disappointing results both times I'm afraid.. Maybe I got a bad copy, or its just me.

Not you Brad..
I have a buddy who bought a Nikon TC for the same purpose.
Not only does the TC reduce the IQ mildly, the macro lens magnifies the image.
So both work hand in hand to give a lower quality image.
Not saying it's impossible to get good images, but it is a task

I will do some tests later and see how it performs with both my macro and telephoto lenses.

I am interested to see how yours go Scott. I am pretty sure I deleted all my shots that I took with it.
I remember I tried a few things to see if I could improve the shots, tried a tripod, used flash to get a faster shutter, I still wasn't happy with the shots.

Here are some test shots, they are softer with less DOF. But I think they are still usable, mind you its overcast drizzly day so full sun will help alot.

I've just ordered the Sigma 1.4 TC. Can't wait to try it on my 18-300, 85 and 50 (on the latter to with my Opteka HD 10x macro extension). I'll post (I assume after Christmas).
