When installed on my D90 in M mode, the shutter ended up locking up taking either really dark photos, really overexposed photos or half a photo.
Anyone else have this problem?

Shut it down, put on my SB-600 and no problems... back to normal.

My intentions with the lens is more for running it in slave mode, but not sure why it would not work properly even in M mode.

nothing in the documentation regarding any of it.

Besides all else... it's not like I do not know how to use a flash. Power it up... Power down... :p

First sentence.... M mode... Not for the camera, but the flash... however camera was also in M mode... as well, and went into other modes after turning on and off... Same issue in other modes... A/S/Auto.
Flash was in no other modes except for when testing remotely on S1...
So the other modes available for the flash is S2 and Multi which allows for a multiple flashes.

Now this is supposed to be a universal flash for any camera with a hot shoe... So I'm flustered in why it would not work on the hot shoe.

What shutter speeds were you using? I suspect too fast since you got almost nothing or only half a photo. Lower your shutter speed gradually and I suspect that when you get to 1/125th of a second you'll get the flash to expose your whole picture.

Change the Flash sync mode on your camera... There are 5 of them... The three you're interested in is Slow Sync, Rear-Curtain Sync, and Front-Curtain Sync.

Why a 560 II by the way? 565 EX isn't that much more, but the features are sure worth it.

Else as everyone else has been saying- learn to use flash in M mode. Muuuuuuuch more to it than wax (power) on or off. No ttl here.

Shutter speed 1/60 Definitely should not have been an issue.

Got the 560II for a song and dance.... This was purchased for off hotshoe shooting. I don't need much for a remote... just as long as there is a slave mode... that's all I need. Slave mode... manual adjustments... so I'm really understanding what else you are getting at.

This is my second flash just to get a little more involved in trying out different strobe lighting for portrait shooting.
