Jessops into administration?

Jessops (UK camera highstreet chain, 192 stores, 2000 employees) has gone into administration.

Shame, they aren't too bad in recent years.

What does this usually mean for camera stores? - good deals?

sometimes if you go to a local store, but always sad when a strong name closes, the box stores are having so much trouble,, Here, ironically, all the chain camera stores closed,, but the locally owned stores are now doing much better.

I don't buy all local, but I try to shop quite a bit at my local camera stores - support your neighbor!

I have just bought all my gear from them, great lads and lasses in our local store, feel sorry for them, they always seem to be really busy as well,it leaves very little choice of where to go in our local town apart from the big electrical retailers and the staff in those can't usually tell the difference between a fridge and an iron let alone have knowledge on photography gear......

Yeah its really sad - I only bought a 35mm DX f1.8 and a Tamron 70-300mm from them last night.

It's a horrible situation, true, if they fold all we have is very few independents and those 'supermarket' electronic goods stores as you say left in the UK. Perhaps Jessops will be bought by Currys-PC world or a company like.

Video killed the radio star, internet is killing the highstreet retail.. :(

many of the stores were in small towns with little foot fall so I hope the bigger ones will survive..never found them very professional in there knowledge but there you go ....

I found the larger Jessops shops to have more knowledgeable staff, which is a shame as it would have been nice for that knowledge to be shared around their stores more :)
Staff are always friendly when I've been and happy to help, but I think ultimately their demise has come from not keeping up with the price competition.

Their online prices are different to their retail shop prices, which is understandable, you'd expect that.
But when you can buy online from them for cheaper and then collect instore , this in my eyes gives the store little chance of grabbing any revenue from the sale - they are literally just a collection point.
And this is an area where they have failed in over the last few years. Instore prices are always high, online prices come in usually midway, and only sometimes on the cheapest price list.

On the plus side, well here's hoping for some clear out sales, as I've got a wishlist and it'd be nice to have a go at getting some of those items at a bargain (or reasonably discounted price).
Chances of that though - not very likely.

Now, all I have to do is make sure I can access Camera Price Comparison when I go out and about in case I pass a closing Jessops :)

What a shame - wander if they will manage to stay as an online retailer or maybe they've sold all stock to other companies.

Saw a guy on the news had a £500 voucher - must be gut wrenching, poor chap.

By the news came out it was already gone 16:00 (nearly 17:00 by the time it was on the BBC site).
Most of their stores close 17:30-18:00 so there was no chance of a manic feeding frenzy by bargain hunters - shame, but also good.

Ahh well, there are plenty of cheaper online retailers out there, one of the reasons they went under in the first place!
