So I am supposed to be doing my photography journey blog weekly...well I got busy. I finally got some pictures up though so visit my blog at A Journey in Photography to check out the rest and comment on the others there. This one is one of my favorites from the set, what do you think?

I really don't like giving negative feedback but you asked so .. IMHO your shot lacks impact. It comes across very washed out.
What were you trying to convey?

I think with some post processing you could get a lot more out of the sky and the trees.

You do allow editing so I have gone OTT with your shot to show whats possible but look what you captured in the file.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply and the feedback! The point of the picture was to show the vastness overlooking the valley. I do not like editing but maybe because I do not have an expensive camera I need to get used to having to edit. Could you tell me what you did for editing on it? Maybe the levels you have set for the picture? I did do editing on the picture but just in the sky because I feel that the trees looked over edited when I did it. Thank you again!

I guess you shoot in JPEG ?

The camera default settings Nikon use for JPEG are fairly bland, try changing the quality settings to landscape or even vivid to see what looks better.

I don't know what post processing software you use but all I did to your shot was increase the saturation, the contrast in the sky and the overall clarity. There are lots good tutorials on YouTube for most of the popular software packages.

You have to post process raw files that explains your post.
If you use LR then that's a great start. Take a look at the Adobe training videos with Julianne Kost. They take you through the steps needed.

To get the most out of a shot without post processing what is the best to shoot in? I will go back to shooting RAW for my photo shoots and stuff but just for general pictures that I might not want to later process which is best?

If you don't want to post process then shoot JPG.
Try adjusting the Picture Control Setting from the default of Standard to Landscape or even Vivid and you will see an immediate difference on shots like your original post.

You can still make some changes even to JPGs but not as much as with a RAW file.
Raw shots will look awful unprocessed.

Sorry for all of the newbie questions. What other options do you think would be good for prints? What do you mean by your last statement?

Jeff-S. I am more than willing to help newbies (I was one not very long ago !) but you have to try and help yourself, you don't seem to want to follow the suggestions but just keep asking more questions. Practice makes a huge difference please try.

I have taken what you said and applied it and have done more reasearch into the difference that RAW makes along with shooting in RAW and doing some post processing. So I am listening and doing and exploring further. All I asked was what file type prints best sorry that I took questions too far but thank you for your help.
