Is there somewhere in LR6 that gives an exposure reading or are you looking at a histogram?

Yes, there's a slider for exposure with a scale

Are you using auto iso as nikons can tend to over expose in certain lighting with it,if it becomes too much of a constant problem try a little -on the exposure,the shadow recovery is pretty good

Yes Mike, I'm using Auto ISO. I will give your suggestion a try when the weather lets me out again.
