Is the 50mm really better than the 35mm?

I always personally felt the 55mm f/1.2 nikkor that Nikon used to produce was about the perfect normal lens that there ever was and I used one for ever on my F2 back when I had it. I think it was a shame that focal length was dropped later on and wish they would make an AF version of it. It makes a wonderful portrait lens. These days I actually prefer a 28mm over a 35mm but I would take a 35mm over a 50mm for general use just my opinion.

Well, you can still buy this lens brand new! its not cheap, around 700 dollars, but for those that want the fastest Nikkor lens currently still made, can get a virgin copy still, but I think you are referencing the 50mm 1.2.

just to note, you can still buy A BRAND NEW nikkor 50 mm 1.2 manual lens, for around 600 dollars, I have been sorely tempted lately to add this lens while you can still buy a brand new copy! to think that one can still purchase a fine fine lens from Nikkor after all these years..

well after a month or more of contemplation i decided to take the plunge for the 35 mm for now..
just ordered it!! :)
i hope i made the right choice~

it's not like you couldn't buy the 50 as well. $200 isn't really that much of an investment, is it? Buy the 50 when you have some extra cash!

I just did a class, and one session that I presented was on lens. If you are on a tight budget, and still want a 50 mm, then get an older one and if your camera cannot focus (like a D lens), well manual focus, or better yet go old school and buy an old manual Prime, and if you are on low budget get a 50 mm 1.8 Series E lens (around 30-50 dollars).

Yes, manual focus, and your camera may not meter (which then is educated guess, tune in with historygram).

when you are shooting primes, then really its the lens for the occasion/look. Wide angle will have a different look then a short tele versus full tele.

Yes, one can have one zoom lens (18-200) or even now the 18-300 and almost have it all, well except more distortion, typically slower, and such, or you can shoot primes and have to carry more then one lens in your pockets.
