This butterfly got me by surprise, I didn't have time to change settings to get a faster shutter so its got a bit of movement, but I sort of like the shot so decided to post it.

I was out in the backyard taking photos of the Lorikeets in the Umbrella tree, I noticed this bird fly up into a tree behind me, I wasn't sure what it was until I downloaded the photos. It is a Superb Fruit Dove, I now have taken a photo of all of the Fruit Doves in my backyard :). This is the first time I have seen one of these ones.
Its not a good photo, I had strong backlighting, and I have cropped this to 100%, but I will post it as it completes the Fruit Doves for me.
I have desaturated the background as it was a very bright lime green.

Note-- This is a female, the male is more brightly coloured.

I know we live about 1000km apart Brad, but it looks like your garden is very similar to mine vegetation wide. I was wondering how many different birds you have seen on your property. Do you keep count?

I'm afraid I couldn't even hazard a guess at how many different species I have photographed here Vixen.
And just when I think I might have got them all, an odd one comes out of the blue like yesterday.
I think when I eventually do retire , I will get some that I don't normally see when I am about now.

I copied an excel table of birds from one of the Aussie birdwatching websites and note on it when I actually sight a bird in my garden. I counted them this week and was surprised to see I have seen 70 different birds just in my 10acre plot (and even then I rarely go into one huge chunk of it, so more realistically on the 2acres around the house)

Good idea Vixen, I might do the same. Off to look for a good chart now......

I do the bathing bird survey and birds in backyards survey every year. It's not very involved and as I'm out taking bird photos quite often in the afternoon anyway I don't find it hard at all

Bit wild n wet for birdwatching up the right now tho :(

Yes the birds are all hiding at the moment, the trees are starting to bend in the wind now, and more to come. It's looking like we might get a bit of a blow from Cyclone Debbie in the morning. Hoping it's going to turn, but it keeps tracking towards us.

Vixen, do you remember which website you got that chart from, I couldn't find anything this morning.

That tested the memory and my googling skills but I found it. You need the Challenge Count spreadsheet 2016 linked for download on this page Challenge Count | BirdLife
