Ironwoods Pen Journey

Another one I completed today.

I think the colours of this mixed resin are almost a match for one of my favourite football teams ( Rugby League that is ) , the Brisbane Bronco's.

This one is very very nice. I just love the lines and contrast between the ruby and the almost mother of pearl colours.

Very nice Ironwood... I seem to like the 2nd better (without stone).. not sure why, just (imo) has a cleaner look. Both are good shots and the pens are excellent!

Love the pens Ironwood. The last photo is a winner.

Have you tried using a glass holder of some sort for the pens? Sometimes the holders seem to compete for my attention. But amazing pens non the less.

I also like the uncluttered look, after all it's all about the pen.

I have a piece of clear acrylic rod that I am going to experiment with for a prop to hold the pen. Without something for the pen to sit on it is hard to get it to stop rolling.

Finished off this closed end Rollerball this afternoon. It is my first closed end pen using a resin blank, this one being blue chip cast in black resin.

The darker background made the colors pop more...but made it harder for me to see the clip in the top pic.

The yellow while nice was just ok for me.

But yet another stunning pen. Have you ever done anything to say mimic fish scales? Say something to look like a Pumpkin Seed? (Panfish....or bluegill) The snake skins were amazing.

Where did you learn to make these pens? I looks like it would be an interesting Hobby (like i need another hobby)
Self taught at the start Don, I started making pens in the early '90's. there wasnt much help out there back then.
Nowadays I am a member of 2 pen forums, it is easy to get all the help you need to get started now. I get plenty of inspiration from other penmakers to try new things, and I hope some of them get some inspiration back off some of my work.
It can be a bit of a slippery slope, some call it an addiction, and unless you can sell a few pens to offset the costs, it can be an expensive one at that. Bit like photography I suppose.

I tend to agree on the backgrounds, but I gotta try different things, and hope to get the feedback to see what other people like.

I havent tried a fish scale themed pen yet, the only marine type pens I have made are the Abalone (Paua) shell pens.
Though I have seen a pen that was created out of polymer clay, that the artist calls "Dragon Scales" , very impressive. I will see if I can find a photo and post it here, or I may just put a link to it, because it wont be my photo.

I have had a fair bit going on lately, so not much time for pens.

I started on this ballpoint yesterday afternoon, and finished it today. This is the first pen photos I have taken with my new D7100.
Took a custom white balance setting, and away I went. These ones are jpegs, I took some raw shots, but havent played with them yet. I will leave them for another day.

They all came out a bit underexposed, so I had to lighten them up a bit in Aperture. Do you think I have over sharpened them ?

Let me know what you think.

There is just something beautiful about a simple but bright and shiny object.

Very nice pen! Your pens look almost too good to use.

Thanks for the compliment Deezey.

While I make every one of my pens with the intention that they will be used, some don't ever scribe a line.
At least two of my customers buy my pens to add to their collections, they get put in a cabinet to look at, they obviously get some satisfaction and enjoyment out of this.
Others I know get used only once, for example Wedding pens that are used at the ceremony and then stored for keepsakes. And also my Sister in law was a real-estate salesperson, she used to buy one of my pens for each of the houses that she sold, and present to the new owners to sign the deeds/contracts.

But I think most are used, some carry them as a daily writer. The ones who I know personally, that carry them in their pocket, know that I like to check them out to see how they are wearing, so they will hand them to me to look at when I see them. I have a couple of customers that always bring the pen back to me when it runs out of ink, so that I can change the refill for them.
I also do running repairs if anything ever goes wrong with them, mostly its just a spring that gets lost while they are changing the refill. Sometimes the pen goes through the washing machine when they forget to take it out of their pocket. I have never charged for a repair yet, though sometimes when its obviously from abuse or neglect, I think I should charge them.

Some of your pens I probably wouldn't use either. Not because they are not nice pens....but more of works of art that deserve to be used as such.

Some pens are just for those moments that live up to the pen you use. If that makes sense......sorta like why capture this moment in writing with just any old pen.

Like using a one time use camera when the subject demands to be photographed with a DSLR.

I got a new lens for my birthday the other day, Nikkor afs 35 G f1.8.

Had a bit of a play around with it today, this is not a new pen, there are some other photos of it on this thread.

Apple Aperture has the RAW update for the D7100, so I am back to taking my pics in RAW.

So far I am really liking this lens, only downside for use as a pen lens is you have to be up pretty close.
