iPad/tablet editing and working remotely

I'm hoping to get some advice from others out there who have worked or are currently working via ipad or tablet for photo editing. I will be traveling with my family for around 6 weeks across Europe and wont be able to bring a laptop. That means no photoshop, no raw editing and no 365 updates to Nikonites... or does it?

I have even contemplated buying a Windows Surface Pro and putting lightroom on it.

Interested in some thoughts.

Thanks

I use splashtop to remote into my devices at home while traveling. if you have an iPad, the Camera Connection Kit combined with Snapseed can be surprisingly effective for editing and posting.

Are you sure that you can't find a way to bring a laptop? A Macbook Air or Ultrabook - or even a netbook - will take very little space. How are you backing up your images? I always bring an external drive and keep it separate from my laptop to ensure I have a second copy of my images while traveling. An 11" MBA is about the same size as a tablet.

My iPad editing apps:

Snapseed
Photogene
PS Express
Simply HDR
Be Funky

These are the main ones I use. I have heaps more, but find these will do most things I need. I actually quite enjoy editing on the iPad and posting to forums like this to see people's feedback. BUT, when I want to make a large print, I would never do the PP on the iPad. I use only Photoshop for this.

If you are on holiday, will you have time to do editing etc? Keeping up with the forum is easy as you can pick up WiFi relatively easily at McDonalds etc

Im visiting my wife's family in Serbia and Germany. As I don't speak the language in either of these countries, I expect there will be times when I will retreat to my room and edit a photo or two.

I've had a play around with Snapseed and I must say it's pretty good. I saw it advertised when I bought my Nik suite but didn't give it much notice at the time.

I'm leaning towards shooting in Raw + Fine. Then syncing to the ipad only the Jpegs. That should be enough to keep me up to date with the forum. I know there are devices available which can back up sd cards but never used one. Any recommendations?

I've investigated some of portable data wallet type devices in the past. IMHO they are too expensive for what you get. The laptop seems to be the best option for me.

Newbie here, and I am hoping this isn't too off topic. Trying to find some answers re copying files to my iPad while on a 16 day cruise. The search function is not so helpful when practically everyone, including me, has a "sent from my iPad" in their signature line - lol:)

We will only be in ports 5 of the 16 days, so uploading to the Internet will not be an option for most of the trip. And even when we are in port, I'm not sure i want to spend my days tied to an internet cafe. I have my first dslr so even though I've never shot in RAW and done any SW post production work, I've got about 3 months to get my process down and practice before I go.

However, I was only planning on bringing an IPad, so I have some questions.

It appears the SD card reader (or the cck) have a limitation on the cards they can read. My camera came with a 64 GB SDXC card. Has anyone used the SD Card reader with a 64 GB card?

I was planning on buying some new cards for the trip anyway. Is there a difference between 32GB SDHC and 32 GB SDXC?

If I'm shooting my pictures in raw on a Nikon D5200 22MP, just how many pictures can I get on a 32GB SD card?

Apparently the apple card reader can't read cards formatted in exfat, does the Nikon give you choices on formatting when you put the card in or do you have to format the cards on your computer first?

Sorry for all the questions. I am planning on taking a DSLR class, but I need to buy the cards before the class.
:(

You could look for the post here in the forums on Eye-Fi cards. The Apple card reader works for me but I cant speak on the format you are asking about. The eye-fi goes in your camera and you can transfer wirelessly with a private network between your ipad and camera. It is reported as being slow, but its not slower than a card reader connected the Ipad. I use my Ipad at the ball fields and between games I transfer them to my Ipad for review, works great for what I use it for. Even used when we did family portraits to review and make sure we didnt want to do any retakes.

I kind of dismissed the eye-if cards early on because a 16GB cards will run you between $80 and $100. I can purchase 4 or 5 class 10 16GB cards for that price :(

The apple sd card reader was a one time investment of $29.

I hear ya, but that was the only choice I had with my D7000. Now not sure, but have you looked to see if Nikon has a wireless adapter for your camera.

I think they do, but I would want to make sure someone had experience with the adapter and an IPad (ie is there an app for that) and can I set up a wireless network between that device and my IPad without going to an intermediary wifi router or access point. (The ships wifi charges would bankrupt me!)

Krs_2007 I'm sorry if I sound so negative. I hate it when people come to forums like this and then shoot down all your advice.

It's not that I'm not open, it just seemed like the iPad SD card reader was an inexpensive solution. I just want to make sure I am buying the right cards and formatting them correctly to work with it.

I hear ya, I have both and use the eye-fi card more and thats why I brought it up. And no worries, just thinking out loud and you didnt bother me. I like the wireless because it stays in the camera and I transfer later or I can transfer to my phone and upload to flickr real quick. With the card reader its another item you have to keep up with and its pretty small. I spent a week with 2 16g cards and never filled them up. I shot 6 youth baseball games, trip to the zoo, KC game, CWS. I think I took around 700 photos and only kept 350, so you can always review your photos on camera and delete if you dont want. I try to stay pretty light when carrying things because I dont like having my bag on me or leaving it by the dugout, so I use the wireless card which does jpg and then transfer and review on the Ipad. Not sure what I will do on vacation, I know some that just buy extra cards and deal with it when they get back. I like the idea of having them on a card and another device.

Good luck in your decision and post back what you figure out and what works. This question comes up on forums all the time.

I guess I don't know how to do a proper search. I tried every combination I could think of, but kept getting false hits because of iPad in the signature line. I finally gave up and just came to the computers and tablets thread and started reading from the most current backward. I had to go all the way back to march to find this one.

I use the following on my iPad and iPhone:
Snapseed
PS Touch
Photo raw

You can see my images creating using these apps - http://www.flickr.com/photos/derekhall/

Hope this helps.

Hey Derek,

Try Photogene. Many more editing options inc noise reduction, curves and healing brushes. If you want to do some serious pp, try and app called Laminar Pro. It has layers :)

I use PS touch on my Xoom and it's been working great for me! But I haven't used a computer so I can't compare them.

Tried out Laminar Pro, it's good. However, I still think PS Touch has an easier interface to use and I love Snapseed for quick adjustments. Going to continue playing around with LP. You should checkout PhotoRaw if you want to work with RAW images on your iPad, unless you know of a better RAW editor on the iPad?

Next up will be testing Photogene, but I want to fully explore LP first.
