IMHO anyone seen using an iPad to take photos should be repeatedly slapped around the head with said device... but that's just me :p

As for the topic in hand - I think a comparison would soon show up the immediate differences when cropped, or displayed on anything but the both device's viewers (i.e. not looking at the picture on the iPad or camera but on a monitor etc)

It can't. As you mention, it has a tiny lens and sensor. I bet it's super grainy up close.

It also has a 9" screen as opposed to the 3" one on your camera so at first glance it can look impressive.

Maybe try shooting in auto everything next time and see if the images improve. If they do then take note of the settings and use them in manual next time.

This is a good tip....one I've seen before and one I've mentioned as well.
Use a tripod .... For consistency....frame your shot in full Auto. Note all the settings. Switch to manual, replicate the settings and re-take the shot. If the picture isn't the same, check the settings.
When you're happy that in manual you've got the settings right, change them. One at a time, and by varying amounts, to see what affects they make.
I did this with flash photography and I had what I thought were amazing results from a little SB400
