First time I see these. I gamble it's some hornet but I'm not sure which type. They're certainly big enough. If anyone knows what it is, feel free. Size was 4-5cm which is around 2 inch I guess. It's not a sole insect, there was another in the same area so I suspect they're somewhat social.

It doesn't look like they're predators and I didn't see a sting so that conflicts with the hornet. They got some features of hoverflies but they're much smaller normally.

Hornet mimic hoverfly. I didn't even know they existed.
