A robber fly -- they eat bees. Not sure what varieties you have in Texas

Thanks. Makes sense now. I kept thinking it reminded me of a Cicada Killer, which are huge.
I looked it up based on your ID. It is also called a "Bee Killer". Thanks a bunch. I keep learning new things here on Nikonites.

These are some of my first attempts at photographing insects with the Nikon 300mm f4 PF lens on the D500 - a fantastic combination that I am very pleased with.
