Indoor Portrait Of My Sister

This link talks about how the shutter can freeze motion. This link talks explains how you can freeze motion with your flash. There are videos on Youtube showing how the flash can freeze motion too. Worth checking out!

I have the EXIF Data, but I was wrong, the shutter speeds are not exactly the same, but both are very slow and should result in a blurry image when hand held.

The first shot of your sister is soft, I would contribute that to the slow shutter speed, why did the flash not freeze that shot?

Rick, may be a good idea in the future to edit your last post instead of posting 3 separate posts one after the other... just a suggestion ;)

While the first shot of my sister is not the sharpest image I have taken, I don't think it's too soft, perhaps a little. The shutter speed was slow (1/30) but the flash should have frozen her. If it didn't freeze her, then I would assume there was too much ambient light. Flash is a complicated thing to learn in my opinion.

Your website has stunning photographs and you own a professional camera, yet flash freezing a subject is a new concept to you?

I seem to think one sentence at a time :), also editing makes you reload the page first which is more work!

I'm not really into flash work, but it is very interesting. As the link suggests, a higher aperature might also help, but I don't always want a lot of DoF. I'm using continuous lighting for my portraits, I like seeing the light and composing in "real time" I guess. Keep posting your work, I'd like to see your progress.

How slow is your internet? reloading a page takes just a few seconds. I'm still learning how to balance ambient light with flash. It's my understanding that the wider an aperture is, the less flash power you need. I also know that shutter speed controls ambient light. Anyway, I will post a few more photos in the next few days but I warn you, there may be more links to click on!

i am like rick, you never know about links.

There are probably thousands of other members, like us, that past over your work due to posting a link. Imagine the disappointment when we clicked on your thread, only to be confronted by a link to the unknown.

It's not a link to the unknown... When you hover over a hyperlink, in your browsers status bar, it tells you what the website url is. My links are to Flickr, an image hosting and sharing site which we all know is a legit, common and safe site. The url shows this. I wanted opinion and comparison on all 4 photos at once because they belong in a set. I couldn't post pictures directly as it's against forum rules. Perhaps the forum rules should change so you still can only post one image per day but if it belongs to a set then multiple images are allowed.
