Images from Nikonites on google

I learned something today, images we post here on Nikonites end up in google image searches. I had always known google-bots kept a record of our conversations and titles of our posts but I never realized they also record our images.

Is it just me or does this make anyone else feel a little uncomfortable?

yes, it bothers me also. Privacy is gone forever. I was in a store that i do business with, a guy came up with a scanner and started talking with me, turns out they had
every transaction on me from day one. It has gone beyond any thing we can do to stop it, homeland or someone else will say national security or we just want to serve u better. The only safe thing to do is rob banks or convenience stores they seem unable to come up with good pictures of the bad guys. :)

Yep, as long as the images are public Google will index. Think of it as free advertising for your images and for Nikonites as a whole. Make sure to watermark your pics!

So how does it work otherwise?
I just realised we have a public/private option for the images we post, but how about general posts?
Considering this to be a private forum, does that get tracked too?
Going out of the way, is it the same for all other private trackers as well?

I think its good, just put your watermark because when these images appear in google image search people will get back to Nikonites to see the source of the image,in this way you will get better traffic. If you want to prevent google/other bots from crawling specific directories(may be containing images) you could edit the robots.txt file

User-agent: *
Disallow: /images/

Hope this Helps

I don't recall seeing an option to make images private. Where is that at? I am not too keen on them being public but then I am sure there is so much out there already we are unaware of. I miss the concept of privacy it doesn't seem to be valued the way it once was. In some ways we need to go back. Technology is great but sharing it with the group in which it was intended and only that group would be very fantastic. I too thought this was a private form. Guess I am incorrect in that assumption.

It is a new world you all better keep up or get left behind! Analog is dead welcome to Digital! You need privacy? Go to the head! LOL

Anthony and Jeff hit the nail on the head. We can barely keep our credit card numbers private nowadays. if you're on the net, any expectation of privacy is wishful thinking!

By public, I mean every forum on this site.

There is an option to make a gallery album private, but then only you can see it.

The only way around this is to make forums on this site that only members can see, but to be honest, this would be counterproductive to the site unless we wanted to make some exclusive member only forums.

One of the reasons i don't post pictures of family - NEVER my daughter - or other people on this site. You just don't know where it is going to end up or how it may be used. If you have a Social Insurance (security) Number, you are already in cyber space anyhow!

It's not "privacy" that bothers me, it's more a sense of piracy that bothers me. I have no problem with not having privacy, no one in the modern world does, however even in this non-private world there is still a right to own your own work.

I think we all agree with that, it's too bad. Best thing we can do I guess is use watermarks and avoid sailing near somalia.
