Image numbering help

I have been looking for a thread that explains how to set the camera/memory card so that image numbers are consecutive and continue from last taken even when old ones have been deleted.
Can anyone show me where this is or how it is done?
D5100 is the camera in question.

Menu, custom setting menu, shooting/display, File number sequence, select and turn it on.

No problems, found this in the book "Nikon D5100 for Dummies" which I got when I bought my camera, a great book that explains all the cameras features very clearly and I would recommend.

Don't forget to reset after you reach nearly the 10.000 mark. Cos if you don't do it - the camera won't save a pic even the card is empty. (A friend of mine had this problem).

I've reset after 9965 photos.

Never heard of that.

All Nikons do is start over at 0001. Which might be an issue when you start to download the newer images if you only have one directory.

On the D7100, when I hit 10,000, it switched to the second card. I couldn't figure out why it stopped writing to card 1. I thought I had a problem before I realized I had taken 10,000 photos.

Thats a strange one, camera should reset back to 0001 but create a new folder until it reaches 999 folders full of 9999 photos. Your friend must take a lot of photos.

I had 38,000+ photos on my D5100 in 11 months. I know, I take a lot of photos, but I'm getting better. I keep a lot of them now.
