I'm officially paired up

Well, I am now the owner of a pair of D600's. I read a FS ad on another camera forum and it would seem that there is more than 1 great place for Nikon lovers on the net, because not only was it the right price, after trading emails with him he offered to send it to me on approval, with no money up front required. What I got for not a lot was a D600 with 3600 clicks, genuine Nikon MB-D14 grip, all accessories, 2 batteries and even two 32GB cards. I also couldn't pass up a spare 18-105mm for my D7100 since the other lives on the IR camera.

The D600 is now on its way to Nikon to have the shutter work done (if I wind up with a D610 on this one it'll be the most amazing deal ever).

I've also realized that the grip is something I need now that I'm doing more street work. I can't tell you how many times I've almost elbowed someone in the head as I rotate the camera.

So, what am I gonna do with all this equipment? The D800 is going up for sale (or trade). I love my wife, and when I told her what I was going to do she said, "If you think you'll need the D800 then don't get rid of it", but the truth is that what I get for it will go in a fund for future equipment (or a down payment on a D4s someday). Unless I trade it for something - who knows? It's a great camera, but it's more than I need resolution-wise on an FX, and the fps isn't high enough to justify using it for wildlife, and the D7100 fixed that.

So, if you're thinking about a D800, ping me. :)

OK, I have to ask and if you dont mind, what was the awesome price you paid? If its really that good I may start looking for one myself as I want a backup body and really love this camera.

Personally, I'd get both D600's swapped out for D610's just so you won't have trouble down the road. Congratulations though, Jake, sounds like you've got a plan!

I also have a pair of D600s, both bought used, and then got the shutter replacement on both. Very happy with them, and I'm glad to see that you don't feel the need for the D800 because that has been the only thing nagging me when I see a used D800 on Craigslist. If Jake doesn't need it, I don't need it.

Sounds like a great deal Jake! Congrats.

I've got a Meike grip for my D7100 waiting in my Amazon cart, looking to order a few more items at once. Just can't spend good glass money on the Nikon grip.

Doubly jealous now! Can't complain about the wonders of the D7100, though, so I won't cry all over your thread.

Congrats!

I expect no trouble at all from either D600 post-servicing. My old one has been a workhorse since getting repaired last year, and I only sent it back in because, hey, it was free and it's a new shutter. This one has lower miles and I suspect that if the first run doesn't fix things then I can raise a stink and get a 610, but I really don't expect that.

Price? Lets just say that I didn't need to haggle, and would have felt dirty if I did. Less money than a new D7100, and this morning, as he's shipping out the various pieces he didn't send when he sent to body for me to check out, he asks me, "Can you use a Sigma 70-300mm? I'm never going to use this thing." I almost never fall into deals like this, so I'll take it this time.

As for the D800, I have no idea what they're actually going for, though I see them listed between $1700-2200. My thought is to maybe trade for a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II. Not that I need it, but after doing a lot of night shooting this past week I can see me using it a lot more than I would the D800.

Enough said Jake, Thanks I got an idea now and might start looking myself. Although I keep coming back to a 7100, so geese who knows, just need the right deal to show up and then the hook is set.

Kevin, for most of what I do I like having a pair of FX's, and lived without the DX for some time. But I've learned my lesson (the argument explored in a nearly 2 year old thread here somewhere) and realize that it's a must for wildlife and birds unless unless I want to break the bank on glass. I think a D600 + D7100 is more than enough, and I was considering going with that until this fell in my lap.

Thanks Jake, I have time its not something I will do soon. Hoping when the time comes the prices will have dropped on the 7100 more, which is what I am leaning towards. They aren't bad now, but I figure they should drop a little more but that is depending on what Nikon does in Sept with their announcements.

Honestly I was leaning towards the 800's but I keep bringing myself back to the 7100. Who knows I may win the lottery and will be able to afford a D4, yeah right.

I like your call here. Flip the D800 for some fast glass and take Mrs. out to a fancy restaurant a couple of times.

Good call and good luck with it. I think 2 D600's and a pair of top of the line DX bodies with nearly the same layout is top notch....tho I would probably C/L the D7000 and get another pc of fast glass and go out to dinner one more time to another nice place.

Snap snap yum yum!

Sharing the same glass over multiple formats is awesome. Fx and Cx has been very versatile for me. I'll add a Dx eventually, it's like doubling/tripling your lens inventory.
