hey everyone, i'm new to photography and ive taken a fancy to a Nikon D5100, it just felt right in my hands after having a play around with simmilar spec and priced cameras. The reason i'm getting into photography, is because i love hiking and regulary hike with a small compact digital, but i want something better as i want to capture better and better images of places i love. So landscape photography for me.

Congratulations, you have chosen an excellent camera, make sure you also get an excellent lens to go with it. The kit lens 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens is a really good beginners lens. But you may soon find yourself wanting more "reach" so consider also getting the 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens. I had both of these lenses when I got my D3100 and until I bought my 50mm f/1.8 lens, the 55-300mm never came off of my D3100 body.
Just my $0.02 cents worth!

Welcome.

The kit lens is a great little lens and will serve you well.

A 55-200mm or 55-300mm is a great lens too, but as you've already stated, you're after better shots of your landscape, so the 18-55mm is plenty wide enough for those, until you need to invest in even wider stuff!

Very good choice. And I agree that the 18-55 kit lens is excellent. I use the 18-55 far more than my 55-200 or 35mm prime. Far more. Enjoy.

Thanks for the opinion's everyone, :) however the dealer I'm buying the camera through (jessops) sells the camera with an 18-105mm lens, how do you rate these, does anyone on here use them?

Obviously it has a longer reach. But, if I had to pay more over the 18-55mm, I'd pass. I don't know what you're paying in US, so don't know if it's a bargain. In the US the 18-105 costs approximately 150% more than the 18-55, or $259 vs $99. I'd get the 18-55 and the 55-200 for that difference.

I'm a real fan of the kit lens. This is a personal opinion and not to bet your life on.

I have the 18-105 as it came packaged with my camera. I really like the versatility from wide to a little bit of zoom. It's fairly compact and has been a great walkaround lens for me. I think if I had gotten the 18-55 I would miss the longer reach.

I believe that will cost you £524.95 from there, or are you getting it cheaper.
Remember you can still claim £55 cashback on that.

The 18-105 is a nice lens, but it is around 60% heavier than the 18-55mm kit lens, something you may want to consider when hiking.
And £404 vs £524 for 18-55mm & 18-105mm kits respectively it something else you may want to consider :)

yes it the £524.95, offer from jessops but i'm wanting to take it out on a ten month interest free finance deal, so ill have to enquire about the cashback on purchase, i've looked around and jessops suits me best as regards to finance others i.e currys, argos charge ridiculous amounts of interest

Hi
I got my D5100 from Jessops a couple of weeeks ago and went for the 18-105mm with it ,also done the 10 months interest free credit ( why not its better in my bank making money rather then theirs) I am a newbie to photography and i am loving the camera with this lense, the guys in Jessops were really helpful and altered the kit to suit my needs.
