I need to learn

Me too, we are in the right place! I generally do not like composition which cuts off part of the subject, but for some reason this works on this shot. I think because it is still balanced. I like the angle, my only suggestion would be to have used some fill flash to eliminate her face being in a slight shadow.

Thank you for your comment. I cropped this photo be course she had no top on and I did not want to put the whole photo on the web.

Lovely Shot! What a cutie she is. I agree with Rick, especially if you can adjust your flash just a small amount of flash maybe at 1/4 or 1/8 output would have eliminated the shadows. One other item (hate to be a nag) but the critique rules requires your photo exif data so we can see everything about your exposure. You can download a free exif viewer from Opanda.

Thank you for your feedback. I have downloaded Opanda. So can you now see the exif now? I had forgotten that I had used my Sony for this shot, hope that is not a problem. I would like to make a comment or too of my own. It was a candid shot taken at a family party so not time to play with settings. Re the slight shadow on face, is this not what you would expect with someone wearing a hat? I look forward to your reply. Thanks Phillip

From a "critique" perspective, in my opinion fill flash would have highlighted her face more. The shadow is certainly natural and if that was your objective than you have accomplished it.

Here's my take on the shot. I like the composition and exposure. I would add a bit of fill light on the face in shadow and certainly add some snap to the overall portrait. You've done a good job. Example of enhancements mentioned below:

I love this portrait. Excellent composition and a beautiful child. The other alternative to a fill flash is a reflector directed toward the shadowy part of her face to redirect some of the light. Unless you're using TTL/BL and controlling the flash EV, it's really easy to overexpose a shot like this and get blown out areas that you can't recover.

Your portraits are getting better each time you post.
