Mike I'm new like you are...I've been just taking a lot of pictures and reading. I shoot in manual, learning from my mistakes etc, bad pictures don't cost anything right. Can't imagine what you guys had to do learning on film cameras...eeeesh.

I think one thing new photographers all too frequently do *not* understand is the principle of Exposure Reciprocity.

This tutorial explains it using the Teeter-Totter Analogy that I learned on. This concept is, in my opinion, absolutely crucial to understand and that site presents the best explanation of the concept I've yet seen. Advance the sides by using the "Next" button at the top right of the screen.
