I need a small favor from a D7100 owner.

If anyone has a minute could you please try this for me.
Put the cam in Aperture priority, and select an ISO setting(any will do).
Then put the cam in Auto mode (not the green one where the flash pops up but the one below it where the flash doesn't pop up.)

Now take a few shots with different lighting,{ie indoors, outdoors) and check if the ISO changes at all.

Since I haven't shot in Auto before, I don't know if there is something wrong with my cam or not. The ISO doesn't change at all.
I have it at 100, and it stays there whether I shoot it indoors or outside in the sunshine.

Auto ISO has to be enabled for the ISO to change. It's in the shooting menu, third page, ISO Sensitivity Settings, inside there you can turn it on and limit how it works.

Mine changed. In A-mode I changed to ISO 100 and turned Auto ISO off. When I changed it to AUTO MODE (with no flash) the auto-ISO was ON so value changed with my settings. Now if I turned auto ISO off while in "auto mode" then it would not change.

The auto mode with the circle slash through the flash icon? If you have been using that mode with auto ISO off it will remember what you last set it to,

Thanks I appreciate it.

Let me explain why I needed this info, before someone thinks I've gone nuttso and started shooting in Auto mode.:)

Mrs Blacktop has been somewhat enthusiastic about shooting lately with my d7100. At the moment I don't want to hamper her enthusiasm by explaining to her about ISO and aperture and all that good stuff that comes automatically to most of us.
Once I see that she really wants to learn, then I'll show her some things slowly. Right now I'm just helping her with composition , holding the cam steady and things like that.

Yes that one. I guess there is something going on with my cam. ISO will not change in Auto mode whether I have auto ISO on or off.
On the D750 it works either way.

I tested this and my results are the same as yours. If I select an ISO value with the camera in No-Flash Auto, the ISO does not change from where I set it; regardless of lighting condition.

Thanks Paul. It does work on my D750. Maybe I'll have to let Mrs Blacktop use the D750 and I'm just goona have to get myself a D500. I think this seems fair.

Just tried mine. D7100/d7200. Switching to Auto without flash switches to auto iso automatically. I cannot take it off of auto iso in the usual way with the iso button + front command wheel. I can change it from the rear command wheel. Turning the rear wheel, it moves off of auto and to 100, 125, 160, etc. It then remembers that iso be it a fixed value or auto. So if you are looking for iso to change, try the ISO button + rear command wheel and turn it to below 100 and it will change to auto. (regardless of what your non-auto settings are.) It seems to remember this setting whether you turn the camera off or go to regular settings.

By gosh, you sir are a genius. Thanks, that did the trick.

My Mrs. shoots with my D7100. Here are the settings I use for her and she gets good results.

Program mode
Auto ISO min 100 max 3200
Auto shutter speed with the slider set on 1 click to the right of center. So slightly faster shutter speed than normal.

This has worked quite well for her. As we are out shooting and a situation comes up that needs something different then I take that as a teaching opportunity. I only change things 1 at the time and I suggest that on several occasions until she remembers and uses it on her own, then we move on to the new teaching moment.
