I had the Nikkor 18-105mm and really liked it. The lens has a nice sweat spot range for most situations.

It's good for the money and it's a nice balanced lens for the camera.

To answer one of the Op's questions, as mentioned, the 18-200mm is above the $300 even for a good used one.

If just starting out I'd recommend the 35 F1.8. It is a sharp lens & a real bargain. Once you master this lens then move on to another like the 18-105 or 16-85.

Enjoy your new D7000.

hi adam...

i'm also agree with 18-105. It's a good lens. However it's a bit pricy in Japan. If dont mind second hand lens, try buying at kitamura online or kakaku.net or many other second hand shop (they are many in japan)..i assume u are in tokyo...i found 2 great stores near Akihabara...
while i was in japan, i bought the 18-105 lens thru rakuten online. go for white box and it fit the $300 budget. Some stores do mark up their 2nd goodies. If are lucky u can find 80-200 f/2.8 at $350.
Happy Hunting!

The 18-105 covers a lot of focal lengths, eliminating the need for the 18-55, the 35, and the 50. Those can come later as your budget changes.

Great walk around lens for all sorts of shooting scenarios. This is one lens you will not outgrow any time soon, and....it's within your budget.

Another vote for the 18-105. You should also be able to get a used 50mm 1.8D and still fall within the $300 budget. This will give you a nice lens for low-light situations, portraits, and general usability. I'm a huge, huge fan of my 35mm 1.8 AF-S, but it is around $200 new so you couldn't get it and the 18-105mm.

Another vote for 18-105. I am also new to dslr (and to this forum), just bought D7000 two weeks back and was going through the same dilemma. Did a lot of research (within my budget) and finally bought 18-105. A very nice lense for day to day use. Later when you are done playing with 18-105 and saved some money again, you can check for a longer range like 70-300 or prime lenses. I bought Tamron SP AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD A005 with that.

I too would suggest the 18-105mm lens as thats what I use a lot on my D90, I paid just under $200 for it on e-Bay
And I also use a 70-300mm lens that I also got on e-Bay for just under $100. So that's 2 lenses for just under $300.
