Why do people put a high reserve on something but they put a lower starting bid. Why not just have a higher start bid or no reserve?

Plus, if you have a lens that typically sells for $2grand all day everyday, you can save money by listing it for $9.99 and save on listing fees.

What difference would it make? If their reserve is $2000, and all you're willing to spend is $1999, you're not going to win the auction anyway.
I agree. If you're an educated bidder, you know what you'll pay for the item. Doesn't matter if you know the reserve or not.

I've messaged sellers on a few reserve auctions asking the reserve price and they quickly replied with the info. I think they mainly do it to spur interest and get some momentum going. Small-time sellers get 50 free insertions per month, so in some cases it may not be to lessen their insertion fees. I don't care for reserve auctions, mainly because they tend to get a lot of traffic, so I guess it works.

What I don't understand is those selling and buying used items for more than they may be purchased for when new.

I can't figure that out either. Especially the ones who want to sell something used for twice the price of new/with warranty.

ETA: Another is those who list something for $1 less than the BIN price. Like a lens.........starting bid: $299 / Buy It Now $300.

Once a bid is placed, Buy It Now goes away, in cases like that the seller may actually end up getting more than the BIN was when it was listed.

Agreed. I've been watching Pocketwizards for months now, scooping up deals from time to time. Too often I see Plus II units actually selling for $100 each PLUS shipping. Who is buying these when a PlusX is $99? I'll never understand the uninformed impulse buyer :)

And why are some really cheap items listed at a selling price of $999?? There is a reason, and I am not sure it is to trick people somehow.

And this is anything. a new lens thats sells for $400, these guys are selling for $800. the exact number is not relevant but were talking super high numbers. theyre pricing it as if they dont know what it sells for.
