How well organized is your Lightroom catalogue(s)?

How many people are fastidious in keeping their Lightroom catalogue(s) properly indexed? And by that I mean are all your images tagged with the appropriate keywording, etc.? And on this same subject, how many photographers here use multiple catalogues? I've not yet started additional catalogues and have the entire Lightroom in a single catalogue. Is this not a good idea or ? As for keyword indexing, short of going thru each and every image (like I'm doing tonight adding keywords), is there a simpler way of categorizing your images as you upload them? Or is this where having different catalogues come in handy? I've decided it's time to get my act organized and by nights end will have all(-ish) my images keyword indexed.

TIA

Well, I'm ashamed to say that I have not tagged every photo. I do have a lot of "collections" (by subject matter) so it makes it easier to find a particular photo.

You can set up a "preset" on import that includes keywords. The problem with me is that I forget to change the preset and then all the imported photos are tagged incorrectly. There is the "spraycan" function that makes tagging photos pretty easy.

As far as different catalogues, I think it's more trouble than it's worth. You have to shut down and reopen every time you change the catalogue. I start a new catalogue when the year changes . . . easier to remember ( with some overlap).

The collections work the best for me.

Thanks for the reminder that the photos need to be tagged . . . I waste way too much time hunting for a particular photo that I didn't put into a collection.

I actually do something similar to this but I don't use Lightroom at all. When I was in graphic design and photography classes my sophomore years in college they tried to get me to use Adobe Bridge to browse my files for Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. To be honest I don't like using it either I have my own collections on my MAC in my photographs folder everything is named by the type of photos they are and by date. Its easy for me to browse to what I want in Photoshop.

I have everything filed by the date and location in a single catalogue. Most of my images have at least one keyword, but there are far too many that have none.

Mine is a mess, of sorts. I recently purchased an external drive and I'm in the process of placing everything on it. My goal is to become more organized in Lightroom.

I am pretty organized, not everything tagged but put my photos in using the dating scheme, so if I import a photo today it goes in Photos=>2012=>2012-09-11 so that I can at least track by date. I'm fairly good about tagging but not OCD with it, need to learn to use the SprayCan to tag and see if easier.
