How to shoot during bright sunlight?

I asked. It's the onboard one. Time for a SB-700. :)

Must have missed that. If it is the onboard one then on a bright beach like in my part of the world that flash will not make a bit of difference. Sand and surf is extreme.

I shoot the D5100 like his. the onboard is more for decoration or emergencies. I bought the SB-700 after trying to use the onboard one time.

I've heard great things about the 700. I will be getting one soon. I used the on-board flash on my 600 a lot on vacation in Jamaica and Bahamas on the beach, and the flash seemed to work for me pretty good, except when it was pretty bright out, the flash seemed to over-expose the subject every time, so it was always dialed down. I think it will work if the subject is fairly close. If it's far away in bright sun, won't do much... but around 10 feet or close, I think it's better than nothing.

Things to remember with the onboard flash with the D5100

on-board flash can't sync at shutter speeds greater than 1/200 second

guide number of 12 in meters or 39 in feet at ISO 100 in auto mode, extending slightly to 13 meters (43 feet) in manual mode

interesting, that is the same as the D600

Get a SB-700

I still think the Active D-Lighting will work out better for casual shooting of kids playing on the beach. They are not going to want to be still for dad or mom to set up the camera.

I've used the onboard flash on the D300 plus on point and shoot cameras without problems on the beach...

I don't like to take to much gear to the beach....

Hi All,
sorry for the late post. These are my photos from the last trip to Ballarat. I tried to set the metering to matrix, use D-lighting with maximum setting, adjust iso to 400, adjust WB to sunlight, disable flash to avoid overexposure on subjects and have a little experiments with Aperture&Shutter combinations. It took times, but I think I learn a way to take both subject and background in a daylight. Still need learn more to have a good composition, since I don't want to spend my time in editing the photos :)

thanks :)
