If it's a fixed light you can play with it to place the shadow on the subject. How to adjust shadows with a flash and humbrella. Is anyone use a car spotlight that you plug in the 12v that have a battery and you place it. If that I would need a way to hold it there with a grip.

Take the picture, look at the shadow in the rear LCD, then adjust the flash and repeat if necessary. Just a little experience goes a long way towards knowing what to expect in the first place (it should be about like last time). Shadows on the subject are mostly about lighting ratio.

Studio flash will have an incandescent modeling light on them, but like your 12V thing, they are not likely the same ratio as the flash provides. Some trial flash inspection is still required for critical work.

Where shadows fall is also an important consideration, if you do some practice with hard shadows first it will be easier to see.

Most photography books have chapters dealing with shadows. One I could recommend is "Exposure and Lighting For Digital Photographers Only"
