I'm with you. Most people measure twice, cut once. I don't measure and cut myself.Good luck Bill. I'm a mechanical dunce. No help here other than moral support.

Too bad I live so far away I could help you. I'm a electrician, been chasing sparks for over 30 years. You really should get your circuit breakers marked by location. It's easy to do. Just plug a light in a outlet you want to identify and turn the breakers off one at a time until the light goes out. Or, you can get one of these current/voltage detectors. Cost around 20.00 and work great to check if the power is off before working on something that can't be unplugged. ALWAYS TEST THIS DETECTOR ON A KNOWN LIVE SOURCE FIRST!!
My favorite trick is if I'm by myself and need to find the right breaker to a outlet I want to turn off. I plug a radio into it and turn it up so I can hear it at the breaker panel. No tunes, power is off. Just make sure it isn't being powered by batteries as well. When I was doing residential work I always had a radio in my truck for this purpose.

From this angle it doesn't look as bad as I thought. I thought the whole house was flooded or something.

You need to talk to the electrician who did this wiring. You are lucky that it worked as long as it did without burning down the house.
Ok, I just put in my .02 hopefully there is nothing else wrong, and hopefully the other half of the house wasn't subjected to such piss poor work men ship. I was a manager in a maintenance dept for almost 10 years in charge of 72 people with different trades. I've fired mechanics and electricians that did work of that nature and some for even more minor then that. That just shows complete laziness and lack of concern with peoples welfare and safety. I'm stepping off the soap box now.
