Holiday Insurance

Me and the future Mrs are off to Turkey later in the year for 11 days.

When we went to Fuerteventura last year - we took the P&S as I didn't want to risk taking the 5100. However, I regret that decision!!

I really want to take the 5100 with me to Turkey, but would definitely only take it insured.

I have had a look at some camera insurance websites but all I can find is people offering annual insurance. I really only want the insurance for the period we are away as my contents insurance covers it when we're in the country.

Anyone know a decent insurer that will do just the 11 days (or a month or so)? Or any travel insurance companies that will include camera cover as part of the travel cover?

Thanks in advance

I haven't checked into that personally.

Honestly, I'd get the annual insurance and cancel when it expires. Hard to think it's worth it for any insurance company to do a deal like that one.

I get what you're saying, but travel insurance you can buy for just the period you're away - so there must be someone that will do it?

The thing is - I dont really want to pay £100 for a years worth of insurance when I will only actually need it for 11 days.

Did you check with your insurance company? Maybe they have something or maybe you'll be covered under your current policy.

I'm with Marilynne. Because you're traveling on holiday and not shooting professionally, your personal possessions may be covered by your home owners' insurance, provided you have that. Give them a call and check.

You're comparing apples and oranges here... When you say you want to insure your camera, I'm assuming you mean against theft or damage? That's an "apple" in comparison to the "orange" of short-term medical insurance while traveling abroad. The former is a winning bet for an insurance company probably better than 99% of the time and hence a very profitable proposition; but the latter? Heh... Not such a good bet. At least not for an insurance company.

A rider on your homeowners insurance MIGHT be in order but those can easily outweigh the replacement costs pretty quickly.

In the UK travel insurance usually covers luggage (clothes etc.), cash (£250 ish depending on your policy), delayed flights & out of pocket expenses etc. etc. - it's not so limited as just medical insurance. We actually get completely free medical insurance across the EU!

If the cover I'm looking for doesn't exist, then that's fine. But seeing as you can get short term insurance for virtually everything else I'm sure it's out there somewhere! Even if I have to pay 1/4 of the price for 1/12 of the cover, it still means I'm not shelling out quite so much for such a short period of time.
