Nice choice in camera, the D5300. I'm sure it will serve you well for years to come....at least until the NAS hits you! (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome).

Ha ha he gets beat up on Welcome to dyxum - Home of the alpha system photographer too, I think the only Minolta/Sony products he has ever liked are the Maxxum 100 2.8 Macro and the A99. He crushes everything else!
I of course am easily entertained! Got to hand it to the dude, makes a living playing with camera equipment....wish I had thought of it, I go broke playing with camera equipment....

check out the sigma 18-200, the new one from the contempory series. i tried this lens and it took fantastic shots, just there was some compatibility issues with my d7100. i think there were also issues with the d5300 which have now been fixed with a firmware update from sigma.
