Hey you Bird phototographers!

Been creaped out lately, due to some birds! A couple days ago I saw 15 buzzards in our next door neighbor's back yard! Yes 15, and no I'm not kidding you! Today I saw 8-9 of them in the neighbor's yard, and when I came home there were 3 of them, that flew up to perch on the peak of roof of our town house! They were not much afraid of me,my car, nor the car horn either!
Have you heard of buzzards raiding trash bags, or of them in these numbers in towns? They are pretty big, and I would be hard pressed to defend me or my wife if they decided to dive at us! If there were 15 diving at us, I would be overwhelmed as big as they are!

So any thoughts from those of you who know much about these birds? Keep in mind my wife has cancer and will be weak when/if she comes home tomorrow! I don't need any issues, so I figured I'd ask here as a better safe than sorry type of thing.

Thanks for any info.

The vultures down here love dumpsters. I don't think they ever go after living things.

I haven't seen more than 2 at a time and only a few times ever. Around here (suburbs), they go after roadkill. Your neighbor must have something highly smelly in the trash that is attracting them. You might want to say something to your neighbors, or if there is an office that oversees the townhouses, you might want to let them know.

We own our house, and the others have a couple different owners. I didn't smell anything in the air, though I would bet the buzzards have a much better sense of smell than I do.
So like I thought, it is likely the neighbor's trash. We close our can lids, and none of our garbage has been scattered.

I've never heard of a vulture (buzzard) attacking any living thing. I have personally chased them off of roadkill more than once. They will hover around when chased off, but they keep plenty of distance. In my opinion, they are/will not really be a threat to you or your wife. In other words, nothing to worry about. You have enough on your plate.

check with your local animal control or wildlife officials. :) maybe they finished of the body since there are fewer of them, no smell. :)

These guys are all over the place this year here in the Volunteer. (Tennessee). Never saw so many of them before, but they are really harmless. Some are braver than others when it comes to staying put on a feed, but they won't bother people.

I have seen a bunch of them in a yard near here. There were at least a dozen.
My friend was creeped out just like you when a bunch of them perched all over her roof.

They are are probably just scavaging for whatever carcass is around.
Good photo-op.

They're nature's scavengers. Not predatory at all. We're backed to a field and we always know when a deer has dropped dead because they show up in the trees along the back of the yard. There's a spot about a mile from us along a stream where they seem to roost during the winter. I suppose the water provides just enough of a bump in temperature because they're there every morning. This is just one tree full - there's more. Turkey Vultures and Black Vultures. They're better than smelling rotting carcasses. Wouldn't worry about 'em.

On a side note. If they feel threatened by you they will try and vomit on you. So don't stand under them if you chase them off

That is valuable information to have. I never knew that and I'll be more careful from now on.:)

We have them around here a lot. Part of living in the sticks. I wobble around on my cane and they just fly off.
