How does it compare to the d700 or d600?

D700 & D300 make an incredible combo. Both are 12MPs D700FX & D300DX - they share the same focusing system, battery & grip, controls, buttons etc are the same on both IQ wise both the same up to ISO 1600 at which point the D700 pulls away. Having said that on several occasions I produced clean shots @ ISO 3200 with the D300. Can't really compare it to the D600 it has more MPs different focus system etc

I can't say enough good things about the D300. It's all I expected it would be, and more! This is what you call a REAL camera! :)
Couple of shots I took with it yesterday before I had to go off and do my regular job of aerial photography:

This D300 is an" oldie but goodie..... Got mine 5 mos ago used @40k actuations but still going good!
I noticed when I use my D5100 kit lens:18-105mm on it, the images seem sharper than those using my D5100.

Well, I also thought that my D90 was sharper than my D7000, but, after careful sharpening, the D7000 really shined. Be aware that just looking at files at 100% on the screen don't do justice to the real printed results. But the D90 was easier to use than the 7000. Seemed that motion blur shows a lot more on a file that has more pixels.

As long as you like your images, keep on clicking.
