Help with pictures i want to post

I have posted pictures on various forums over the last 10 years but never on a photo forum so was wondering if my technique could be improved,in the past i have just used save for web in an early version of photo shop elements but apart from losing all data i wondered if it didn't retain the best quality.
With my D5100 i got view nx2 and i can see how to lower the file size in that with the option to retain exif ect but it looks as though it alters the original and not just make a copy am i right and is there a way around this.

I'm not familiar with View NX2, but if I'm not using Gimp my program of choice for resizing is Picasa. It's a free download from Google, and it'll let you export photos as a different size pretty easily.

If you don't want to alter the original do a "Save As" and work with/post the copy.

I use ViewNX2 and when I convert my photo it makes a copy and does not overwrite the original.

Just tried it and it wont let me enter a new image size,i erase the value in the top box start to enter a new one and 320 appears in the box in red so i will need to play more.

The long edge is the only one you can change when converting. I use 1000 and it creates the short edge for you.

Oh, just thought of something, if the short edge falls below 400 you'll have to increase the long edge until the short edge is 400 or more, otherwise you'll get an upload error on Nikonites.

I did it failed to upload was going to try and sort it but dont need to now.

I keep telling people about Irfanview, but they don't seem to be catching on. Easiest viewing and resizing program there is......and it's free!

You and me both... One the most awesome freeware apps out there. I have CS6 but I'm more likely to use IRFanview for quick resizing and cropping. For day-to-day image viewing for sorting and cataloging it's the ONLY way to fly.
