Help with my lens 55-200mm

I have a 55-200mm lens on my D3200. When I take pictures with it during the day it works great. When I try to use it inside or at night I can't get it to take any pictures.

No the lens has never been dropped or wet. I take very good care of my lens.

This is the first time I have had this issue and I have had the lens since April.

Can anyone give me an idea of what I might need to fix? Is it a settings thing? The lens is on AF not MF. That was the first thing I checked.

Thanks

WE needs a few details.

  1. What mode are you shooting in? Auto, Program, Etc
  2. What ISO do you have it set to?
  3. Are you using flash?
The more you can tell us about how you are trying to shoot in low light the better.

It's probably too dark for the auto-focus to get a lock, which in turn prevents the shutter from operating.

Switch the lens to manual focus and you'll probably be able to take pictures just fine.

Similarly, if you try shooting on Automatic, will it shoot? Be prepared for the flash to open and fire. Cheers, Brad :)

I am not with my camera right now to give you all the settings. I will respond is more detail shortly. I do know the lens is on AF and I do have my flash open.

It sounds like it is not focusing. Are your indoor subjects fairly close? If so, you may have been getting some focus help from the auto focus assist light. It may have gotten turned off in the menu since you say it has worked better in the past. So check your manual to see if the auto focus assist light is disabled. Also, there are certain situations where it will not come on even if it is enabled. This may explain why it has worked better at times.
