We have a Nikon D3200 and the pictures are going to the internal memory and not the SD card. I had about 20 pics go to the SD card originally and then it switched to the internal memory. I didn't know this until I went to print our pics and they weren't on the SD card. Any ideas?
If the card has not yet been formatted, put it back in the camera, and see if the camera can display those missing pictures. If so, it could be couple of causes... It may have just been a problem transferring images to computer, and a retry might get them next time. Other wild notions, maybe camera just got set to be Raw images, and maybe the photo center retrieval method where this happens does not see raw files.
FWIW, the cameras have an option to allow the shutter to work even without a memory card, but those pictures cannot be saved of course. D3200 Reference Manual, page 144.
The Reference manual is worthwhile. A few printed manuals are skimpy short (D3200 and D5200 I think, seems to have been an experiment with skimpy printed manuals), in which case the Reference manual is a free complete larger manual on PDF, more complete than the User manual. And PDF is searchable.
