I know that I am new, but i got this camera as a gift and i want to make the most out of it i have four month old and i want to take the best pictures of her as i can, i tried to do the blurry background picture today and was un-sucessfull , can someone please tell me what i was doing wrong please?

I was focused on the object, or her in this case and i had a light source in the background? does it have to be a artificial light?

Would love to help you, however in order to do so we need to know. What camera do you have? What lens are you using? Please provide this information for us to help you.

What lens are you using? You need to put your camera into 'A' aperture priority mode. then turn your command dial to the LOWEST number (3.5 perhaps).

There's more to it than just that but experiment with different zoom lengths and apertures and have fun.

Use Dave's advice but also the subject needs to have a bit of distance from the background to make sure you throw the background out of focus and keep your subject in focus.

I use this technique for most of my pictures and I use the the following settings on my D5100:
A mode (aperture priority)
F/stop set at f/4.5
Shutter speed at at least 1/250 to ensure sharpness

If you have a Portrait Mode (as does the D5100), you can select it and soften the backround. This will allow you to get underway with some nice shots -- this setting automatically sets up the shot using settings similar to what you have read above; either approach will work.

Using a tripod, defeating the flash in favor of soft room light and using settings suggested above will help as well. Your baby girl will be happy to be your perfect model. :)
