Help decide between 2 lenses - URGENT

I have found my 70-300VR to be quite sharp at 300mm. I have tried taking photos at 300 and another at 200, and then cropping the 200 shot to get the same view as at 300. The 300 shot is always better.

Here is a shot I took zoomed right out at 300mm, this was taken with a D3100 by the way.

Nice photo Brad, and great feedback... I have heard a couple of other people also say they thought the 70-300 was very good even right out at 300...

Incidentally did you see Rorie's How can I improve my range of glass thread - I'd think you'd be able to comment on his frustration with the 70-300 seeming to not have enough zoom for wildlife work?

I think you have to make a choice between price and speed. I must say I like the 70-300 vr its sharp and a refurbished model is the way to go. I got mine from Cameta its around $350.00 now . I do understand what you mean about the difficulty in trying to decide. I own more lenses in that focal range than I need. I have the 70-200 vr 2.8 , the new 70-200 f4 , and the 70-300 vr I also have the 55-200 vr (so light and small) I bought the 70-300 vr after I read some reviews and I have been pleased. try to remember its about technique and not about equipment good luck
