Hey guys been hanging out on this site a while reading everything but today I thought id sign up since I noticed a scratch on my D7100 sensor that wasn't there before.. idk how it got there but its there. now the question i have is that i know there is no AA filter but is there still something in front of the sensor like glass protecting it or is it just a bare sensor. id like to send my camera in for repair but im unsure of the cost does anyone know?

any answers would be very much appreciated

Thank You

The AA filter is gone... not the glass plate.

Without seeing a sample image, I'll bet you're seeing a hair. A simple Rocket Blower should solve the problem.

Don't bother sending your camera in. It costs way too much money, you're out a camera for a week, and you can do it yourself. It's stupendously easy.

Yes I'll bet it's something like a hair. I'm thinking how in the world could it get scratched. Were you maybe running like a mad man through the woods holding your camera out in front of you without a lens on while holding all the other obstacles out of the way that normally sit in front of the sensor and running into a barrel of spikes?

I think i scratched it accidentally with the rocket blower while cleaning it the other day lol... how idk... im glad to hear there is still a glass plate in front though... Im very handy with electronics. is this something i could possibly fix on my own or does things have to be specially align or need special tools to do? anyone know of a place to get this fixed for cheap?

It not just a small piece of glass that's held on with a couple screws. It's layered in as part of the entire sensor assembly. You are not going to be just reaching in and changing it.

Post a sample image to show us what you're seeing.

yeah i tried wet cleaning it as well and it didn't remove the mark :(

I do have insurance ($250 deductible) for gear as im a professional photographer and this is just a back up camera but its still a bummer.

There's no way a rocket blower should have induced a scratch like that, but dragging a cleaning swab across the sensor certainly could have. Dang, that sucks.

There's stuff stuck to that top glass in the stack, including the system that induces the "Self Cleaning" vibrations, so replacing a piece of glass is an over-simplification of what needs to be done to repair it. I suspect you're in for a $300+ repair bill, regardless of where you send it.

Why did you insert your rocketblower inside the camera? Definitely a bummer--hope you can get it fixed quickly! :)

I am curious if you could share exactly how you did this (if you know). Did you bang the blower into the sensor? I ask because we often tell newcomers not to be shy about cleaning their own sensor, that it is not 'that delicate'. We refrain from using q-tips because they might scratch. I'm just trying to get a feel for the hardness/scratch resistance of the sensor and learn if simply bumping with a plastic tool would do this damage. I think you are the first person that we have encountered that has actually ruined his sensor, so maybe we can learn something from your misfortune.:devilish:

I did end up sending out this camera and getting it repaired. they just replaced the filter that was in front of the sensor. no issues with it since and it works great. :)
