Dangerspouse gave a good possibility to check, but if you can turn the focus ring on that 50mm lens without really feeling resistance from a focus motor, then I would say the auto-manual focus switch is set to manual. It it located on front of the camera kind of facing to the side by the lens mount. A "D" type autofocus lens couples to a motor inside the camera body and it will make the autofocus ring go stiff when it engages. It also makes a fairly loud whining noise when it is working.
