Hi all! My name is Mimi and I am from San Diego. I recently caught the traveling bug and some of the photos I have taken on my travel are such poor quality-the images from my memories are better than the ones I have captured on camera! So, I purchased my first DSLR-a Nikon D7000 body- and Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX lens.

I have been reading reviews on different forums looking for the last two lenses but the information is mind-boggling and overwhelming. :eyetwitch: I am looking for a good traveling lenses and thought about purchasing the Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens or Tamron 70-300mm VC. What would you say are good on-the-go travel lenses? ANY recommendations would be appreciated :watermelon::watermelon::watermelon::watermelon:

I can't wait to put this camera to use! Thanks!!!

Welcome to the forums.

The 55-300 is indeed a good all round choice to compliment an excellant prime you already have :)
I would maybe even look at a 18-105mm if you want to add a zoom to the equation that captures the wider angle too :)

Hi Mimi... Welcome
I'm not a lens expert, but I can suggest you try renting one for a few days to see how you like it. I've used lensrentals.com because they can ship me quickly. There's also borrowlenses.com that has a number of west coast locations.

I have a Tamaron 18-270 that I use on a D7000 almost exclusively. It it Auto Focus and has Vibration Reduction as well. When I purchased it about two months ago it was about $550 USD including a $100.00 mail in rebate. I see they are now going for even less than that. When I do use the D7000 (my main camera is now a full frame D600) the Tamaron is the go to "do-it-all" walk around lens. Great sharp photo's and super versatile. I am sure that at 3X the price Nikon has a marginally better similar model.
I own some Nikon lenses but they are not the "do-it-all" type. In my opinion it is better to spend the big bucks on lenses that are more specific in their purpose. I have a Nikon 17-35mm "in-the-mail" for the D600.
You may feel differently and that's cool too.
The point I am trying to make is to at least give the Tamaron a try. You may be pleasantly surprised. The D7000 (or D7100) is again in my opinion Nikon's best DX camera. You may wind up going full frame like I am doing and having that much cash tied up in expensive Nikon DX only lenses is .....uhhh.... unfortunate.
Your mileage may vary.
Ohhh.... welcome aboard this fine forum.

Welcome. Unless you like 3-4 pounds hanging around your neck, steer clear of something like the Tamron 70-300mm vc. To me, a travel lens is one that let's you avoid changing lenses. Therefore, something like the tamron 18-270 would be great. Good luck with your shopping and happy travels :)

Welcome to the forum, Mimi. A nice, general purpose, all around lens would be the 18-105 AF-S. Would work very well with your D7000. Cheap, too. :)

Though I jumped into lens discussion before this, but I wholeheartedly agree with you on the motion. I've taken quite a few shots that I wish I had more proper gear for at the time.

Welcome to the site. You cant go wrong with the 35mm 1.4G, and the 50mm 1.4G. The 16-35mm and the 24-70mm. Those are your best options in my opinion. Overall if you can only pick one, it would be the 24-70mm all day. Since you have a DX camera, I can say the 16-35mm will be great also.

Check out my pages for help. I do all kinds of reviews and tutorials.
