HDR … Grrrrr!

Sorry folks but help needed again.

I have the manual open nd going along at a nice clip until I reached the HDR instructions.

Not sure what I am doing wrong but I have tried every option on the Mode Dial and then gone to Menu to set the HDR to "On"

No matter what I have done I keep getting the message: "this option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state."

So what needs changing to activate the HDR?

Cheers

In your Custom Settings Menu, look under Flash/Braketing. Better yet...look in your owners manual under "Braketing". It might be listed as "BKT" or some other acronym.

This is what makes HDR possible. :)

5 Pictures, and import to Photoshop. 2 under exposed, 2 over exposed, 1 in the middle. Photoshop... HDR done right. Give it a whirl. I'm pretty sure there are also a bunch of free HDR softwares out there. Give it a whirl, it's amazing what HDR done out of the camera can produce.

The HDR mode in the D5100 is not really that good. It only uses two exposures which is not really enough to really look that good. If you go with Bracketing you can get 3 shots very fast and you can set the amount of exposure difference to get the effect you want. If you set the release mode on continuous if will fire all three shots very fast which enables you to hand hold the shot. Then using software you can do the HDR there. I do HDR all the time that way with my D5100

All these were done that way and without a tripod. I use PhotoShop CS6 to do all these.

Okay that solves the problem for now - thanks Mfrankfort and Don (nice pics by the way Don)

All a bit above me for now so this goes on the back burner for a while.

Don its not that as a concern. I have so much more to learn at the moment. I'll get to HDR because I do want to do it. I'll get to it.

I have been using GIMP but also have Photoshop - that's another learning curve I have to embark on.

To many things to do - not enough time.
