I can honestly say, that I've never bought anything photographic that I absolutely didn't need and had to have...

Paying the membership of my local camera club where we have a pro. Not only do you learn from looking at/critique fellow members photos but the critique of your photos makes you aware of how to improve your own. The critique is never "that is cr*p" but "if you had done this or that" perhaps it would have been better.

I think what has made me a better photographer is buying a DSLR camera and getting away from point and shoot cameras
