The purpose of the Guide Number test is to verify the validity of the manufacturer’s published guide number as it relates to the actual guide number for your flash when used with your camera.
Why not test it yourself and post your results and conclusions and tell us how far Nikon's published results deviate from your test results?
Mine seems to be fine, and works pretty much the way I want... otherwise I just crank in some exposure compensation and pull the trigger again... I should mention, I don't work in a laboratory...
The SB-910 has the GN mode, where you enter a measured distance, and it computes and uses GN for flash exposure. I don't have a SB-910, but on the SB-800, it is quite accurate. I predict it will impress you. GN is independent of reflective subject colors.
