GPS activation

Hello all,

I have a Nikon D5100 and there`s a question I could not find an answer for. I wanted to use the GPS function of the camera and connected a GPN-1 from Opteka. According to the documentation this should be no problem. But I could not activate the GPS function. If I try to check the location a message appears telling that with the current "Status or with the configuration of the camera" this is not possible.
Does anyone have some experience with this GPS and does someone know where to activate the GPS in the menu of the camera? The documentation is not such nice.

Many thanks

I just sent the opteka back as it took 5+ mins to get a lock and the green light to stop flashing. My friends also went faulty. Are you sure it's getting a solid green light? It won't show long/lat while searching.

Not sure how much info he can add to the profile to help with his question Don ;)

The profile is not just for this question but it will help. If someone looks at his profile they will see the wrong camera at this point but if it were correct it will hep for the next question he has. So many people ask questions and do not give important pieces of information like what camera they have. They may have said in a different post but we don't see that post.

Thanks for the replies. I hope the profile is correct now with all required information
I got in contact with the GPN-1 Opteka support and one question was if I have activated the GPS on the camera. But I could not find any setting to activate the GPS on the D5100. Not in the camera menu or in the documentation. For me it looks like I just have to connect the GPS and in case it`s OK it`s starting to scan. There should be a GPS symbol on the camera screen, which should start blinking. And with a green solid light of the GPN-1 the GPS symbol should be solig, too. Right?
For me it looks like the GPS is simply faulty. Even if I get a green light on the GPN-1 I do not get a symbol on the camera screen. and no GPS location data.

Thanks

Regards,
Rainer

GPS is located on the Setup (wrench?) menu in the D5100. See page 174 of the D5100 online reference manual.

Yes you are right, that`s the setup menu entry for the GPS. The only problem is that the menu point "location" is greyed out and if I want to select it a message appears telling "with current settings or status of the camera this function is not available". Even in case of a solid green light of the GPN-1 the entry stays greyed out. I think I have to wait for the answer of the support and send the GPS logger back.

Thanks

FYI. Looks like the Opteka support does not know why the PGN-1 is not working. He`s waiting for the answers I`m getting from this forum here. I`m wondering if Opteka has not done some tests with the d5100 and the settings to be used?! If there`s no other opinion I have to send it back.

Thanks
