hello and welcome.

Best advice is shot shot shot, open a 365 thread and post all your shots in there, look at other peoples posts you like and try and remember what they shot at (if you hover your mouse over the bottom left of the pic you will see the exif details) i took a few phone pics of the details to remember, like the rest of us with time you will get it, your 70-300 will be good for moon shots, you will get good crater details with it, good luck and happy shooting.

a 365 is an awesome idea. Maybe I'll set that as my goal for 2017. That will be a neat way to see my progress.

watch out for the 365 challenge, if you take a pic every day for a year you will get a $50 amazon gift card, i think there are 5 left in this years challenge.

Thank you very much for the info! i just happened to get a kindle paperwhite for Christmas also...an amazon gift card would be good for some books

I made it about 6 months then just screwed up and didn't take a pic. However, I learned a lot in that time, and I learned by studying other people's images just like @Roy1961 pointed out.
