Fresh, new look for my B&W vision

OK, so I reinstall, because I have nothing better to do but complain about something I'm not going to use

I open GIMP and this is what it looks like...

Really?! That's what you want your users to experience the first time they open a product?!

So I rearrange the middle window, since that's apparently what I'm supposed to do(?) and choose to open a photo. Up pops the open dialogue...

Again, really?!

No need to respond. I poked around and found that there's an option under the Window menu for "Single Window Mode", which is exactly what I would have expected to see as a default, with the scattered independent windows as an option.

Again, just a really clumsy program whose interface could probably be improved rather easily. On first start-up give the user an option for a default viewing mode, and for God's sake, give me an icon that lets me know the difference between "I'm working on it" and "I've stopped working entirely".

If you give some people $100, they'd complain it was five 20s instead of two 50s.

As for a response, : truthfully, I can't get my copy to act like that. Even if I tried.

I don't know. Maybe there's a setting in your computer or graphics card that causes it to act that way.

All I can say is that I've installed GIMP on 3 computers over the years, 2 PC's (one desktop, on laptop) and a Macbook Pro, and every time I've started it up it's been a "WTF?!" moment. At least after the first time you remember, "Oh yeah, that's what it is!" The open dialogue was new to the Mac.

I've always had other graphics programs at my disposal, so I've never bothered to get past the initial annoyances. There are a good number of regular users, so it's obviously got its fans.
