Spot on with both. I had the camera on auto everything but focus! It seems you have to know your onions for these here things to function optimally.

Depth of Field when you are close up varies depending on the camera and lens combination used.
Found this site that allows you to enter your specific camera and lens details and shows you the depth of field at given focus distances. You can then calculate how many shots to stack.
