Superb shots ! If you’re interested in close-up flower photography then you should invest in a macro lens. Using a macro lens enables you to focus up close so you can really fill the frame with your subject. A true macro lens produces an image recorded on the sensor at life-size or larger. Great care has to be taken when focusing macro lenses as depth of field is very limited when you’re so close to your subject.
Thank you. I do have the 105mm f2.8 AIS macro. The idea is to see to what extent the normal lenses we have can be used for close up shots of flowers. Why flowers? Mainly as they are quite big. The DX sensor is 24mmx16mm about 1 x .66 inches. Most of the flowers I have shot are two inches or more across. If a lense allows closer minimum focus distance; as does the 18-55 kit lense; then the flowers not only fill up the sensor area, but in most cases exceed it, so one has to back up.
I agree that for objects say 1.5 inchess or less the macro is the way to go. With my lense and extension tubes I can go upto 2:1 easily, that means an insect just 1/2 inch across will fill the sensor. At present I am not using macro lense as its focus ring has become very tight.
