Very interesting, thanks. It is the first I heard of it too. I only find this Flash Warning menu in the D7000, D7100, D600 manuals, so maybe those are the only ones that do this? It does seem maybe they overdid it, but the human can always decide it. And the menu can turn it off there too.
I agree, the edge of the viewfinder seems not the best place for the flash symbol - because it is quite important when using flash, if shooting fast, it indicates when the flash is ready (recycle is complete), but also for TTL, indicates when the flash was possibly limited by its maximum power capability, and you need to make changes.
