Flash Suggestions Needed For D3100

Flash Pot

Senior Member
I am a total newbie to DSLR photography, so please bear with me as I tread through.....

I've just ordered the D3100 and don't have it in hand yet. That said, from what I have read the pop-up flash is just "ok", but not hight regarded.

Since I just spent more than I'll ever tell the wife :) (I also bought a 55m-200mm zoom lens) I am looking for a good quality but cheap flash.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

As a total newbie... maybe you should delay the flash until you have a chance to get the camera and try it out... What really determines if and what flash is what you are taking for photo's... You may find (being new) that your flash use is more "snap-shot" and the built-in is adequate. Should you find otherwise down the road, then you can determine what you need it to do and then pick what fits!

Flip through this section quickly and you'll see the Nikon SB-700 (if your budget permits) or Yongnuo are the choices :)

I agree with both sentiments. Get to learn that camera first, and if you still think you need more flash power then have a look at something like the Yongnuo 565EX for $100ish or the Nikon SB-700.

Yes, definitely get it in hand and fiddle with it for a while. Get to know it and how you like to use it most. That will give you a feel of what accessories will be most useful to you so you can prioritize your purchases. That way you don't end up buying things you don't need, or don't work well with your style of photography.
