Thank you kindly :D it was a straight shot though. Other than a slight lift of the shadow areas its rather untouched.

I really like the clarity and exposure of this shot. Was it taken with your D300? Was it taken RAW or jpg? Which lens was used, it looks really sharp on my iPad HD screen. Was a tripod involved?

Sorry for all the questions, but I couldn't see any exif. Not that it would help with all the questions :)

Thanks

Geoff

Yes it was a raw shot and tripod job. I used a tamron 17-50 on this one, at 200 ISO and F8 for maximise sharpness.

Thanks for clarifying that. If they're unsharpened RAW I'm even more impressed, although I'm sure the tripod is helping. Note to self " stop being lazy and use the tripod more"!!

I'm also interested that you used that lens. I recently used a Nikon 17-55 and whilst it produced nice shots, they were not something that would cause me to go out and spend £1100 because I wouldn't use it enough. That Tamron looks to be in the £300-£350 range. That would go nicely between the 11-16 and 70-200 giving 2.8 and super sharpness all the way through.

Both are also great, even comparing with the first one :)
Pity that on the first photo it is a bit "closed" I'd love the house without cuts, I guess the 17mm were short for that angle. But the colors and sharpness are great.

The tamron 17-50 is best in class for sharpness. Its an extremely sharp lens indeed. Its bargain of the century too. Build quality is very good. Its sits in the middle of nikon kit and pro. It does have one flaw though, it suffers from field curvature at 17mm. The lens needs to be stopped down to at least 5.6 to compensate, f8 even better. It was very much sharpened lol. I have a method.... around twenty in unsharp mask. I then turn into a tiff for any further alteration if any. I resharpen the tiff again in unsharp mask to about 12 and then turn them all to JPG. This gives you the perfect untouched JPG at max poss sharpness. For downloading I shrink to 20% or so and then resharpen yet again in unsharp mask to 12. Its a lot of trouble I know, but it gives you the highest amount of detail poss.

Thanks Mestre, I could have gone much wider as I actualy zoomed in. I did not want it looking too fussy though. The second was a bit difficult in the cut. I didnt want the back end of a boat intruding at the edge of the pic as it wouldnt look right. I just kind of liked the stark contrast between the serene water and the abstract looking houses. :)
